" . . . The leaves had already fallen twice by the time Max and Franz found each other again.

In celebration, they arranged to go to Zurich together on leave. Maria had come from Berlin, and was waiting for them at the train station when they arrived.

That night , the three friends wandered the disappointingly empty streets until they caught a glimpse of a narrow shaft of light spilling across a darkened alley.

Through the oily windows of the tiny Cabaret Voltaire they saw the blurred outlines of a young woman performing on a crude stage for a small but very lively audience.

It was there that Max and Hannah met . . ."
