JUNE 2003

THE BLUE FLOWER
HAS BEEN SELECTED BY THE
RICHARD ADLER/ASCAP FOUNDATION
Music Theater Workshop Development Project
AND THE
"NEW NOISES" FESTIVAL OF NEW STAGE WORKS
AS THE MUSICAL THEATER WORK TO BE SHOWCASED
IN THE 2003 FESTIVAL HELD EACH YEAR AT
THE PERRY-MANSFIELD SCHOOL for the PERFORMING ARTS
in STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO June 20-22, 2003

In this second year of a new program jointly sponsored by the ASCAP Foundation and the New Noises Festival, one music theater piece from those showcased in the Los Angeles/Disney and New York ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshops is chosen to spend two weeks in the Rocky Mountains further developing the piece under the guidance of award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The program this year is made possible in part by a generous grant to the ASCAP Foundation from Broadway legend Richard Adler.

Says Andrew Levine, the festival's Music Director: "The collaboration provides ASCAP with an opportunity to further develop a promising work that has been identified through its LA/NY musical theater development workshops with the aim of presenting the work to interested producers. Perry-Mansfield's goal is to provide composers, lyricists and book writers with an atmosphere free of distraction, one conducive to quality work. Our goal is to foster the development of new musical theater works and to engage and excite our students about the collaborative and creative process inherent in the creation of these new works."

At the end of the two week workshop, two reading performances of the full Blue Flower program will be presented, one on Saturday, June 21st for students of the school and invited guests, and one on Sunday, June 22nd that will be open to the public as part of the New Noises Festival. The festival, which runs from Friday to Sunday , will also feature a new work by choreographer Robert Battle performed by his Battleworks Dance Company, and A Place at Forest Lawn, a new play by Luke Yankee and Jim Bontempo.

Stephen Schwartz, who has for many years generously provided his deep experience and broad-ranging talents to help nurture new artists and new musical theater projects, will host a question-and-answer session with the audience after each Blue Flower performance.
